Retainers

The Final Phase

Braces, Invisalign, etc. are the main courses of your care when undergoing orthodontic treatment. However, the next phase (retention) is just as important because it is what keeps your new smile from reverting back to its old position.

Some Things to Know:

  • The retention phase of orthodontic treatment generally lasts at least 24 months and is absolutely crucial to the long-term success of your smile.
  • Without retention it is possible for your teeth to migrate back to their original positions, erasing all of the hard work you’ve put in.
  • Retention is achieved through the use of the retainers prescribed by your orthodontist.

You & Your Retainer

There is a wide variety of retainer types available, and Dr. RJ will discuss your options with you to determine what kind would work best with your individual needs.

Hygiene

Just like with your teeth, it is very important to maintain the cleanliness and hygiene of your retainers. Always be sure to remove your retainers whenever you eat, drink, or brush your teeth. Also, regularly clean every surface of your retainers with a toothbrush and toothpaste. This will ensure that your retainers stay clean and function to the best of their ability. Remember, you can’t have a clean smile without a clean retainer!
